Description:
Danny was picked up as a stray, and never claimed by an owner.  He is a male german shepherd mix, approximately 1 year old, weighing 63 lbs.  He is a very happy and social boy.  He approaches strangers with a wagging tail and is very quick to offer kisses.  He has a ton of energy and needs some work on his basic manners.  He is very food motivated and has been catching on to new things quickly.  He will sit for treats all day if you ask him to.  He's a leaner who loves to have him rump scratched.  He has personality to spare and is quite the clown.

He is very playful towards other dogs and would enjoy having a playmate of similar size.  However, his play can get quite rough, so he needs a dog that can hold his own, and won't let him bully them.  He would be too much for a small or timid dog to handle.  His new people must be willing to work on teaching him how to play a little nicer!  He also needs owners to set clear and strict guidelines, or he will start being the boss of the household.

Because of his rough play, he may not do well with cats, unless you are willing to really work with him in that regards also.

Can you give Danny the love and guidance he needs to become a good doggie citizen???

AN UPDATE FROM DANNY'S FOSTER HOME:

Danny is amazing on walks. He knows sit, stay, shake (with both hands), down, and we are working on 'roll over' right now. Danny is very friendly and kissy and would do best in a home with older kids (teens+) because he is so big and might knock over a smaller child. Danny would prefer to have another dog but not necessary-- he thrives on attention when we are alone together.

At the end of the day, coming home from work or school, Danny would be a great stress reliever, pillow, companion, and buddy. He does the funniest thing when you ask him questions, he turns his head and gets the most confused look ever! His floppy ears only add to this. He likes to watch TV, especially Animal Planet which elicits the same head-turning reaction.

On walks Danny is really good, though it would be best for someone to have a Gentle Leader, just something to help keep him from following EVERY scent. He literally walks with his nose to the ground and is so intensely focused on whatever he trails that he rarely even goes potty on walks. Which brings me to another point, Danny is an excellent tracker/sniffing dog. I have been hiding treats in the basement, giving a slight trail to follow, while keeping Danny in a closed room. When I open the door and let him know I no longer have the treat he instantly goes into track mode and has found every single treat without assistance. So, as you can tell Danny is an exceptional dog with loads of potential in the right environment. He is content to spend most of the time indoors or in the backyard chasing squirrels and birds but an active family would make his energy levels more manageable.

UPDATE FROM DANNY'S ADOPTIVE HOME, JULY 19TH, 2011:

Danny is the best thing that happened to our family. I truely do not know
how we got along with out him. I could not even begin to say enough great
things about him! I am also baffled at how such a great dog could ever be
homeless! He was the perfect addition to our family, stole my heart from
the first time we met! My daughter loves him and he is so gentle with
kids, although sometimes to many kisses may be given! We are blessed to
have found him!

*The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility and does not come with a pedigree. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed. Sometimes the pets appear to be a particular breed(s) in the pictures we receive from our rescue partners and when they arrive we are surprised to see an entirely different breed(s) in person!  If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess. It is with deep longing that we wish there was a breed called "cute" as we believe all of our dogs would fall under this new breed classification!

Completion of an Adoption Application via our website www.midwestanimalrescue.org is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is the first step in our adoption process.

*Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.
