What’s the MARS Story?

It all started with two little Shih Tzus—Candy and Cookie—left behind in a puppy mill. They were overlooked by others, but not by us. In 2006, MARS was founded to give animals like them a second chance. Since then, we’ve rescued over 21,000 dogs and cats. If we can help, we do.

 

 

Can I Meet the Pets in Person?

Yes! Once your application is approved, we’ll schedule a meet and greet.
Because we’re a foster-based rescue , our animals live in real homes—not kennels—so they’re already adjusted to family life. Meeting a foster parent helps you learn more about whether a pet is the right match for your lifestyle.

 

What’s the Adoption Process Like?

1. Submit an Adoption Application
2. Placement Team Review
 - We’ll check vet records, confirm pet policies with landlords if applicable, and make sure everyone’s on board.
3. Approval & Meet-and-Greet
 - Once approved, a Placement Team Member will reach out to arrange a meeting.
 4. Bring Your New Pet Home!
 - This step typically occurs at the same time as Step 3

It typically takes 3–5 days from application to adoption. 

 

What’s It Like to Foster?

Fostering is fun, emotional, and incredibly rewarding. Yes, goodbyes can be tough—but every goodbye opens space to save another life.

We need all types of fosters—from overnight stays to longer-term care. You might help a dog heal emotionally or physically, and MARS supports you every step of the way with supplies, training, vet care, and a supportive community.

How Can I Volunteer?
